Division I official David Kramer breaks
down tape with a crew.
Call It! has established a training and development program so that officials are equipped with all the necessary tools to succeed. Often times officials are given a shirt and whistle and “thrown to the wolves”, as they say, leaving the official blind as to what to expect. By doing so, the official is exposed to situations they are not prepared to handle such as screaming fans, irate coaches, unsporting players, many times leading to bigger problems. The official ends up getting discouraged and giving up officiating all together; not realizing that a wonderful opportunity is being lost.
WNBA official Daryl Humphrey offers some
pointers at a Call It Camp.
For new officials, Call It! has a five week course consisting of classroom and court sessions. Officials will know what to expect when they step out on the court for the first time making the officiating experience much more enjoyable. Here new officials will be taught rules, mechanics, floor coverage, game management and over all handling of officiating business. Following the classroom sessions you will then move on to the court. Here officials will work actual games while being filmed with an actual voice over on the game recording. Officials will then breakdown tape under supervision. Division I officials will also be present as guest speakers. Upon the completion of the course, officials will then be part of the Call It! Roster and will immediately be placed within the leagues that Call It! assigns, giving you the flexibility to earn extra cash while working your own hours.
